International visitor arrivals up 19.9% on last year

11 October 2024

Stats NZ data released today shows international visitor arrivals up 19.9% in the year to August 2024 against the same period last year, to 3,228,846. Visitor arrivals are at 83% to Aug 2024 of pre-COVID levels - well up on the previous year's 69%.

Of our visitor markets, it was pleasing to see a rebound from our Asian markets that were up 65.7% over the previous year (now 72% of pre-COVID level). China reached 244,259 arrivals and 176% increase on the previous year (58% of the pre-COVID level of 417,930). Holiday arrivals increased by 32.2%, though were still only at 76% of the pre-COVID level.

Overall, the visitor arrival data provides a good indicator of the direction of the industry. It is pleasing that there has been growth over the previous year, particularly from our Asian markets and for Holiday arrivals.

However, we still have a way to go as we gradually recover our market position. TIA will continue to track these, and other statistics, to assess the ongoing progress of the industry.
