TIA supports the longstanding industry priority to reduce its carbon emissions to enable tourism to become a net carbon zero industry. Key steps by TIA include:
- TSC Commitment 11 - Carbon Reduction – requires businesses to act urgently to contribute to Aotearoa New Zealand's transition to a net zero carbon economy.
- In 2021, TIA released the Tourism Carbon Challenge to directly challenge the industry to reduce carbon emissions, while setting out the supportive policies that need to be put in place.
Action 7 in Tourism 2050, ‘Achieve Net Carbon Zero’ sets the path for reducing and then eliminating tourism carbon emissions. Targets have been set for aviation carbon emissions to be net zero by 2050 and for non-aviation tourism emissions to be 30% below the 2019 level by 2030.
Key to making progress will be around how all tourism operators act to reduce carbon, while at the same time making sure the appropriate and necessary policies and programmes of government and industry are in place to support and enable the actions by operators.
