  • Submission on Freedom Camping Regulations

    10 October 2022

TIA supports the intent of the Regulations in that it establishes the detailed provisions needed to give effect to the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Bill that is currently before Parliament. This system will establish consistent national rules requiring freedom campers to use a certified self-contained vehicle when staying on land managed by a local authority (and some other publicly owned lands), while allowing local authorities to manage freedom camping within their jurisdiction.

  • Submission on the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Bill

    14 October 2022

TIA supports the intent of the Bill in that it establishes a national rule requiring freedom campers to use a certified self-contained vehicle when staying on land managed by a local authority and some Crown land (LINZ and Waka Kotahi) while also allowing local authorities to decide the places where non-self-contained vehicles are permitted to stop and stay. TIA considers the establishment of these national rules to be a positive step forward.

  • Submission on Futures Pathway Green Paper

    March 2022

The lack of research support for the industry has hindered its development and has meant that issues do not get researched and addressed, but rather they remain and become systemic. Pre-COVID, matters like low productivity, declining social licence and hesitancy in shifting to sustainable practices are all indicative of this failure.

  • Adventure Activity Review submission

    4 November 2021

TIA is concerned that the proposals to better manage natural hazards in the consultation document do not adequately reflect the complexities of adventure activities undertaken in areas of natural hazards. Some of these proposals, if implemented, will likely lead to a significant chilling effect on the outdoor sector.

  • Supporting the survival and transition of tourism

    September 2021

It has been a roller coaster ride since February 2020 for the country’s 35,000 plus tourism businesses. Border closures were necessary but a huge blow. The opening of the Tasman travel bubble in April 2021 lifted spirits but the outbreaks in Australia and the shutting down of Tasman flights meant the benefits were temporary and minimal.

  • Supporting Sustainable Freedom Camping in Aotearoa New Zealand

    14 May 2021

TIA welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Discussion Document - Supporting Sustainable Freedom Camping in Aotearoa New Zealand. This is an opportune time to implement a new framework for managing freedom camping in New Zealand. The issues caused by freedom campers pre-COVID have significantly subsided over the past year due to closed borders. Now is the time to put in place new policies that will have a positive impact on tourism communities and the environment ahead of the industry recovery.
