TIA has long been lobbying for an international convention centre and a network of regional convention centres to help New Zealand attract lucrative international conferences.
Recent advocacy includes our March 2016 letter to the Wellington City Council in support of the Wellington Convention Centre and Movie Museum. Approved by council in August 2016, this investment in new tourism infrastructure will bring lasting economic benefits to Wellington and the whole country. The Movie Museum adds a significant and positive new dimension to the original proposal.
The international business events sector, particularly international conferences and incentives, holds great potential to attract new high value international visitors to New Zealand. International delegates spend significantly more than the average spend per night for holiday visitors. Conferences also help address seasonality, with the majority of conference business held outside the peak summer season.
