TIA has established sustainability as an integral component of the Tourism 2025 & Beyond - A Sustainable Growth Framework Kaupapa Whakapakari Tāpoi.
This is operationalised through the New Zealand Tourism Sustainability Commitment He Kupu Taurangi Kia Toitū Ai Te Tāpoitanga that was launched by TIA in November 2017.
The TSC uses four elements of a balanced scorecard – Economic, Visitor, Host Community and Environment – and establishes eight industry-level Goals to be tracked over time. The initiative is activated by tourism businesses committing to adopt 14 Commitments into their operations.
To maintain momentum, TIA will further develop the TSC to raise standards, develop better connections to specialist service providers, improve measurement and to identify current areas of particular focus.
Over time, the TSC will be a requirement for all TIA members, thereby embedding sustainability as a standard feature within the industry.
