Responsible Camping

TIA leads the Responsible Camping Forum and encourages all campers to stay in holiday parks, Department of Conservation (DOC) camping grounds or other designated areas.

TIA does not support total bans on freedom camping as this would impact on New Zealanders who regard it as a birthright and unfairly penalise the majority of overseas visitors who behave appropriately.

TIA believes that a strong freedom camping framework includes a regional approach that supports responsible camping practices, adequate infrastructure, consistent national messaging including educating campers about acceptable behaviour and where they can and can't camp, and a nationally-aligned approach to enforcement.
